There's no free trial, but there is a seven-day money back guarantee. If you want to pay monthly, Private Internet Access costs $9.95 (£7.85) per month, but you make significant savings by opting to pay for a one-year subscription for $71.88 (£56.51) or, better yet, two years for $83.87 (£65.94), which works out to the equivalent of £2.75 a month. Other streaming services, such as YouTube and Shudder, rely on more basic checks to ensure that users are delivered region-appropriate content and present no problem to PIA. We were sometimes able to watch US Netflix, but couldn't reliably use the service from French and Canadian endpoints. Getting iPlayer streaming working from outside the UK can be hit-and-miss, requiring multiple reconnection attempts to get an IP address that the BBC's detection engine doesn't recognise. Unusually for a consumer VPN provider, some PIA endpoints support port forwarding, which is required for optimal performance on some BitTorrent traffic.

Here, you can configure it to automatically connect on startup, block known ad trackers and sites that serve malware – note that this can interfere with your ability to view websites that heavily integrate trackers. The latest Windows version nestles in your notification area with a secondary list of server endpoint locations for you to choose from and a separate settings window.

While the various client applications look rather different, they offer the most of the same features: Windows and Android users get a bit of flexibility.

You can have up to ten simultaneous connections to your account at given time. These are all within 1.5MB/s of our most recent non-VPN'd reference scores and compare well to the performance of rival providers.

In the past 12 months, we've seen download speeds of over 10MB/s from European endpoints. In our latest tests, we saw typical HTTP transfer speeds of 8.68MB/s (69.44Mbit/s) from UK endpoints, 8MB/s in the Netherlands and 6MB/s in the US.

(Performance tests can only ever represent a snapshot from a single moment in time and can fluctuate both up and down.) We tested performance from endpoints in the US, UK and the Netherlands, transferring data from servers in the same countries. The service provides endpoints in 52 locations across 32 countries and currently has 3341 active VPN and web proxy servers.
